The Newlywed Game – 2019

Jenna Boden

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we wanted to interview some couples at Ridge to see how well they knew each other. Senior Couple Kayci Kleven and Noah Hasegawa and teachers Mr. and Mrs. Romero all answered questions to test their knowledge about their partner.

Mr. Romero’s Responses

How did you first meet?

I met her here, she was a Spanish teacher and I was a science teacher. I started in 1999 and she started I think in 2002, so we were friends long before we ever started dating. She was my lunch buddy.

What was your first date?

We went to Hawaii. Literally we went to Hawaii. We had been friends for so long we never really “dated,” we would go out to dinner or to the movies as just friends. I sold my motorcycle and used the money to buy tickets to go to the big island of Hawaii because I wanted to see an erupting volcano so I asked her if she wanted to go to Hawaii with me and she said yes.

What is your favorite movie?

Oh I have a bunch of them, but I guess my favorite of them all is “The Last Samurai.”

What is your partner’s favorite movie?

“Bad Santa.” I’m dead serious, that’s her favorite movie.

What is your favorite band?

Journey.

What is your partner’s favorite band?

She likes country music, and hip hop, and Spanish popular music, so it’s really hard to narrow it down for her.

What is your most annoying habit?

I’ve got a lot of annoying habits, maybe I put things away and she can’t find them. I’m really OCD and it drives her crazy.

What is your partner’s most annoying habit?

It’s hard because I’m the one that has all the annoying habits. I’m trying really hard to think of one, and one that won’t get me in trouble too. Ok, she gets mad at me for really little things, and the really big, dumb things I do, she doesn’t get mad at me.

What is the strongest aspect of your relationship?

She’s my best friend. Literally, she’s my best friend. The good thing is that she knew what a doofus I was long before we got married, so I can just completely be myself, there’s no awkward first dates she just knew who I was. We’re totally open with each other.

Mrs. Romero’s Responses

How did you first meet?

In school. He was always playing hackey sack outside of the school.

What was your first date?

I don’t know if we had a date. He would always invite me to eat; he was concerned that I didn’t eat enough. He thought we should eat a lot. I guess it was a date when he would say, “Let’s go eat.”

What is your favorite movie?

I love comedies. I love dumb things, like “Ace Ventura,” or “Pet Detective.” I love “Elf,” anything with comedians like Will Ferrel, Adam Sandler, I love movies that make us laugh.

What is your partner’s favorite movie?

The exact opposite, Mr. Romero likes movies that make you cry. Every time we watch a movie, he says “this is my favorite movie.” I’d say he loves documentaries, he loves the History Channel, he’s obsessed with anything on Channel 8.

What is your favorite band?

I love a bunch of Spanish music because I’m always using it in class. I like Enrique Iglesias, and Shakira. I listen to a lot of different music, I listen to country too.

What is your partner’s favorite band?

Journey, the Doobie Brothers.

What is your most annoying habit?

He gets mad that I get mad that he touches my stuff.

What is your partner’s most annoying habit?

He likes to move all of my stuff, and then I can’t find my stuff. I like to have stuff everywhere and he moves my stuff.

What is the strongest aspect of your relationship?

That were really good friends. We like to hike together, and it’s really nice that we work at the same place. We call our trips “stupid adventures.” We love to plan stupid adventures that are really whacky. And it’s not a “stupid adventure” unless we can die doing whatever it is. He likes to do stuff where you can die, so he thinks it’s fun and I’m always scared.
