Mountain Ridge has its Track & Field team preparing for the 2025 spring season. This will mark the last time seniors participate in their respective sport before going off to college. As seniors leave the school, many new freshmen need a helping hand to start their season. For the Track team, they believe that setting an example can encourage newcomers to belong on the team.
During the Spring Sports Media Day prior to the season, the Track & Field seniors along with the coach, Coach Miller were interviewed to describe their experiences while on the team. Amber Buchan comments on the supportive community of the team: “I feel like we’re very encouraging at needs, we always cheer on our teammates, it’s not every man for himself.” The team always aspires to build their morale and consider everyone to be an important part of the team. They definitely hope that their words are not taken for granted when freshmen hear them for the first time.
With that in mind, Owen Dockter adds by saying, “I think people don’t understand that if you can show up everyday and stay consistent, you can go to the next level, so I hope to lead by that example.” Adding on to the “consistency” theme, Zander Wood says “We see more in each other than we do ourselves, we basically aspire to be as good as our teammate.” The biggest takeaway is definitely being able to see greatness in others even if they don’t see it in themselves. This is what shapes the Track & Field team to be stronger than ever when it becomes time to compete.
In order to show freshmen that they belong, Talia Nelson says, “What I want to leave behind is people who say, ‘I had so much fun and I felt like I was in a family’… because that’s what sports is to me.” Thanks to the memories made by Track & Field seniors, it is clear that the Track & Field team can inspire each other and go to the next level.
As the team cheers for their fellow teammates, Coach Miller also believes that the team is well-balanced and mannered. Mr. Miller adds by saying “If you look across each and every event, we’re in really good shape and we just look really strong, so I’m excited for the year.” The coaching staff of the Track & Field team are continuously working hard with the team to ensure that this year is a year to pursue athletes’ passions and achievements.
The Ridge staff and students are definitely looking forward to a wonderful year for the Track & Field team, making sure that every opportunity is given and showing support will be the reason that the team can succeed this year and hope to inspire others to be a part of the running family. Walking in the steps of the seniors before them, these freshmen athletes will help make this season the best one yet.
