The well-renowned singer/songwriter Gracie Abrams first started writing music when she was in 5th grade. Though it took a little longer for her to put herself out there professionally, she came through and released her debut single “Mean it” under Interscope records in 2019 as she had just turned 20. She didn’t exactly rise to fame right away, but she got there as she released even more music throughout her early twenties; two studio albums, two live, three extended plays, and twenty-three singles! In July of 2024, Abrams released her second studio album which she titled “The Secret of Us.” After the skyrocketing success of her music, Abrams released a new version of the album on October 18, 2024 in which she titled, “The Secret of Us Deluxe.” This new album included 22 items as opposed to the 13 on her original. One song has done incredibly well since its release with way over 20 million official U.S streams! That’s So True, leaves millions of new fans screaming the lyrics in their bedrooms, and a recurring question in the air. Is her newly discovered fame deserved? In my opinion, absolutely.
Abrams’ new music is the perfect blend of dramatic and foolhardy, which, needless to say, seem to go pretty well together in the wonderful world of love. That is if you want to write a good song at least. The songs have been beautifully written, and have amazing messages to them as well.
I had the chance to speak with highschool sophomore, Lorelai Atwell about her opinion on Gracie’s music, and I decided to first ask her about her favorite song from the album. “My favorite song from the album was definitely ‘Cool’ and that was probably because of all the instrumentals.” Instrumentals can definitely make a song a whole lot better. Though some people may not like the repetition of her album, this sophomore sure did. “I think this album is better than the original, but only because there were some extra songs on there. There’s also the feel of the live songs that make it 10 times better too.” The new songs also happened to bring a whole new audience! But, popularity can be a killer…so should it be as hyped up as everyone thinks? “I think the hype is definitely appropriate. Gracie’s music is amazing, and I love her so much. Though I can’t help but wish she was just a little less popular. Now everybody loves her music. It’s everywhere, and when songs are everywhere, they tend to get annoying. I definitely do think she deserves it though.” she said
Freshman Keira Ballowe shared her thoughts about the same topics. “My favorite song from the album was ‘That’s so True’ because it was very catchy, and upbeat.” Gracie’s other fans would definitely agree with that one. “The deluxe version of the album definitely sounds better to me because the songs have better beats and there are more of them on it, which offers more of a variety.” Variety is important when it comes to music, because even if some people don’t believe it, songs can get boring. Keira then said, “I think the hype is absolutely appropriate for this album, because it’s actually really good, and the songs are worth it.”
Gracie’s album was amazing and it deservingly brought her to the top. She’s performed with artists such as Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Noah Kahan, and more! Fun fact, she opened for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour 49 times.. which is actually insane because the Era’s Tour was one of the highest grossing of all time and even won “Tour of the Century” at the iHeartRadio music awards on March 17 of this year. I think plenty of others will agree with me when I say, Abrams’ fame was entirely earned because she worked so incredibly hard for it, and I’m sure her little 5th-grade self would be so excited if she saw her now.
